I never used it that much because in a game like stalker having followers is more of a hindrance than a help and they always remain too far away to be useful in enclosed spaces. Remember it's only the commander of the squad that has the option to recruit them even though it recruits all the members of that squad. They will always accept and will then follow you and you can issue commands like wait, follow, hold fire and disband group. I can't remember exactly but it's something like that.
When it's working you can speak to the commander of a friendly squad and the extra option appears that says something like "wanna join me". If they are neutral the option to recruit them does not appear. I've used it and it works but bear in mind it only works for friendly NPCs that are green. It should be but it doesn't hurt to check. At the top make sure it's set to enable=true. When that's done check your configs/plugins folder to make sure the file axr_companion.ltx is in there and open it. Unpack it to your desktop and then look in the axr_companions folder because there are a few files you need to manually copy over in to the correct folders in your Stalker directory.
